We are happy to announce that the winner of the last month's JMA Architectural Scavenger Hunt is..... Neal Campbell! for being the first to identify the October clue: University of Waterloo Health Services Centre on Strauss Lake, and can be approached from Westmount Ave.
A bit about the University of Waterloo Health Services Centre Expansion:
Many of us at JMA graduated from the University of Waterloo, and remember the older health services building, on the edge of the pond – an early project of Moriyama and Teshima Architects in 1968. By 2010, when we (Kearns Mancini Architects and us) started working on this project, the university population had grown from 9,000 to 36,000, and health priorities and service models had changed.
Invariably, as with every project, there were some interesting twists and turns through the design of the new health centre. The wood on the roof terrace of the old Moriyama Health Centre had to be replaced, as it had reached its life expectancy. This work posed the risk of construction debris falling in the water, and upsetting the ecosystem of the pond and of Laurel Creek. To ward against this, a temporary plywood platform was built along the three sides of the Health Centre that are up against the water. It was interesting how this temporary solution changed the architectural relationship between the water and the building.
And now, the 3rd clue of the JMA Architectural Scavenger Hunt:
The first to respond correctly identifying the building wins a bag of coffee beans (or loose leaf tea, if you prefer) from Matter of Taste, or a gift card from Four All Ice Cream. Your choice! You'll just have to swing by our office to pick up your prize and say hi.
When you identify the building, please tell us what the building is (for example “the fire/EMS station”) and the location (for example, “in Breslau visible from the road to Guelph after the turnoff for the Breslau bypass” or “51 Beacon Point Ct, Breslau”)
Send your responses to [email protected]. Write Scavenger Hunt on the subject line. The winner will be announced the following month, along with the new clue.
The small print:
If you worked on, or in, the building, or if you are related to anyone who worked on or in, you can’t win. The first one to respond by email with the correct answer, wins. No one can win more than once. If you cause us to have to make more small print, you can’t win either.
The next scavenger hunt clue will be posted on December 11, and subsequently on the 11th of every month, ending on August 11, 2025.
On behalf of everyone at our studio, thank you for your trust in us, for your friendship, and kindness. Without you, we wouldn’t have made it this far.
