We are happy to announce that the winner of the last month's JMA Architectural Scavenger Hunt is..... Tobias Gallas! being the first to identify the December clue: the Dickson Public School adaptive reuse, located at 65 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge, ON.
A bit about the Dickson Public School adaptive reuse:
Dickson Public School is a prominent city landmark as one ascends the St. Andrews Street hill from downtown Galt. This impressive 19th Century stone school building has recentlybeen repurposed into a residential building with 10 large units. The adaptive reuse of the Dickson Public School has not just saved it from falling into disrepair, but has brought into the community much needed residential units.
Every unit is bright and joyful and celebrates the rich architectural heritage of the old school. Throughout this project, we worked to maintain heritage features, such as wood floors, wainscotting, exposed stone walls, the entryway and its wood stairs and handrails. Some elements that were previously covered up, such as tin ceiling panels, and fenestrations from the pre-1894 additions, were exposed and repurposed.
This project balances the preservation of the architectural intent of Dickson Public School with the requirements of the Ontario Building Code; it balances the integrity of the historic building with expectations of modern life. This renovation brings together the beauty of the architecture of the Dickson Public School into the lives of every resident, and the enjoyment of every citizen.
And now, the 5th clue of the JMA Architectural Scavenger Hunt:
The first to respond correctly identifying the building wins a bag of coffee beans (or loose leaf tea, if you prefer) from Matter of Taste, or a gift card from Four All Ice Cream. Your choice! You'll just have to swing by our office to pick up your prize and say hi.
When you identify the building, please tell us what the building is (for example “the fire/EMS station”) and the location (for example, “in Breslau visible from the road to Guelph after the turnoff for the Breslau bypass” or “51 Beacon Point Ct, Breslau”)
Send your responses to me, [email protected]. Write Scavenger Hunt on the subject line. The winner will be announced the following month, along with the new clue.
The small print:
If you worked on, or in, the building, or if you are related to anyone who worked on or in, you can’t win. The first one to respond by email with the correct answer, wins. No one can win more than once. If you cause us to have to make more small print, you can’t win either.
You can also follow us on Instagram, or check the blog on our website, where we will also be posting the same scavenger hunt clues.
The next scavenger hunt clue will be posted on February 11, and subsequently on the 11th of every month, ending on August 11th, 2025.
